Now, all western medical doctors have to take the Hippocratic Oath before graduating. Hippocrates(Greek philosopher and Doctor) is considered the father of modern medicine.

Early Greek physicians- philosophers- teachers include Hippocrates, Aristotle, Theophrastus, Dioscorides Galen. Even if Dioscorides and Galen were Roman Physicians they were of Greek origin. Dioscorides wrote a five-volume book in his native Greek, Περλης ατρικς, known more widely by its Latin title De Materia Medica which became the predecessor to all modern pharmacopeias.

These early Greek and Roman compilations became the backbone of European medical theory.

Most of the modern conventional medicine or western medicine, as it is called in Asia, derives from Greece. The Greek medical texts were mainly kept in the library of Alexandria which was burnt and the remaining texts were translated into Arabic and (mixed with local medicine) became known as Unani medicine then ended up in Rome. (The Greeks in Arab countries are still called Unan).

Translations of the early Roman-Greek compilations were made into German, then Dutch, then into English, each time subtracting and adding new things, as expected with any kind of translation.

Forty-four drugs, diluents, flavoring agents and emollients mentioned by Discorides are still listed in the official pharmacopoeias of Europe.

Women's folk knowledge existed in undocumented parallel with these texts. They were kept in secrecy and passed on to the next generation through word of mouth. We know that folk medicine was prosecuted specially during the time of the holy inquisition so the secrecy was of very important.

In America the European version of Medical knowledge was mixed with indigenous knowledge, specialy of the use of the medicinal plants, i.e of the Aztecs (Toltecs)

Nowadays, people who have not found relief or cure from the conventional medicine turn to alternative medicine practitioners who view the body as a whole; hence Holistic Practitioners.

Examples of alternative medicine include T.C.M Acupuncture, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Chiropractic e.t.c. Some of the alternative medical practices have origins in antiquity such as T.C.M and Ayurveda. Others have a much recent history and originated in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

We can also find the same method of therapy considered alternative in one county and not in another country. For example chiropractic is not considered alternative in Denmark and Japan. Osteopathic medicine is not an alternative therapy in the U.S.

The most often used alternative therapies for pain in Europe are: Aromatherapy, Reflexology, chiropractic, Body work therapies like Alexander technique, massage, Shiatsu,Ayurvedic medicine.

(Traditional Chinese Medicine)

T.C.M is a Chinese medical system using various techniques aiming to balance the flow of energy in the body and remove stagnation of Qi. It is based on a tradition of more than 2,000 years. It includes herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage (Tui na), qigong and Taiji, dietary therapy, moxibustion and baguar (cupping) .

The meridians in T.C.M. are like the paths where energy flows and the points of the meridians are the main trigger centers of each meridian. When these points are stimulated they affect the flow of the Qi (energy) in the body and affect the corresponding organ’s function. T.C.M.. has been found to be beneficial for a variety of Ailments but in the west it is mainly used to help relieve pain (head ache, back ache e.t.c). P.M.S., help stop smoking, assist in the rehabilitation of stroke patients.

T.C.M is a preventive medicine.
It is used to calm down the imbalances as their first slight symptoms are detected by the T.C.M practitioner/doctor. If a disease has already been fully formed it is too late to calm down the imbalances. It would be like digging a well when thirsty.
In the ancient times if the emperor got sick his doctor would be executed because his work was to keep him from ever falling sick.

Magnetic Energy therapy is also incorporated in T.C.M. as small magnets are used in Ear acupuncture. They are stuck on specific acupoints on the ear in order to provide constant stimulation for an extended period of time (a day or 2) then they are applied on the other ear. They work in two ways, they stimulate the area as little seeds would and they also have their magnetic effect on the body.

Chiropractic Medicine

Chiro –kheri=hand (Greek)+ Practice- praktiki= Ancient Greek (pertaining to action)

Chiropractic started as a secret family practice being taught only to very few people.

It was founded in 1895 by Daniel D. Palmer. His theory was bases on the theory of healing through the manual manipulation of the spine. As all the signals from the brain go down the spine and make their way to a designated place or organ if there is an unnatural pressure on a nerve due to misaligned spinal column it can be released with the chiropractor’s manipulation.

Early traditional therapists believed that illness comes with the blockage or irregular flow of the body’s “energy”. The chiropractors coming from a more scientific point of view considered this energy flow to be the “nervous energy” (electrochemical signals).

Normally one would visit the chiropractor with physical pain complaints. But chiropractic adjustments can also improve overall health. Adjusting the body and the spinal column that has been out of alignment for some time is like tuning a piano. Every so often the piano needs tuning and in order to keep the specific tune, the process has to be repeated several times until the cords get used to being in their new state. The muscles are like these cords, they might pull too much, tugging the spinal disc out of place or they might be too weak to keep the disk in place. Therefore, it would be very irresponsible to criticize a practitioner when the problem reappears after having had one or a couple of sessions and especially without reforming to the chiropractors recommendations.

There are a lot of skeptics who worry about more damage being done with such manipulations but they never stop to consider what kind of damage can be done on an operating table under the surgical knife.

Osteopathy and bone-setting practices are similar to chiropractic with some differences that is why sometimes they are competing with each other.

Energy Therapy

Magnetic Energy Therapy

It is an energy therapy where magnets are used to regulate the flow of “energy” in the body.

As we know earth is a big magnet keeping us on it.

In September 1862, an experiment to specifically address Earth currents was carried out in the Munich Alps (Lamont, 1862).

Lanzerotti, Louis J.; Gregori, Giovanni P. (1986)

magnetic energy

The big magnetic field of the earth obviously affects everything on and around it.

Telluric currents are phenomena observed in the Earth's crust and mantle. These currents are geomagnetically induced currents, which are induced by changes in the outer part of the Earth's magnetic field.

Where these currents pass, archeologists have found ancient constructions, such as the Pyramids, Stonehenge, Angkor wat e.t.c

There are also the so called “ X-points” or electron diffusion regions, at these places the magnetic field of the Earth connects to the magnetic field of the Sun, creating an uninterrupted path leading from our own planet to the sun's atmosphere 93 million miles away.

Jack Scudder of the University of Iowa

Today, small magnets are worn inside bracelets, shoes, and other accessories. They are also used in Chinese medicine.

There is no conclusive scientifically proven evidence that magnets are effective pain relievers.

Reiki is a holistic energy balancing method. It treats not only the body but also the mind and spirit promoting the balance of emotions and reduction of stress.

It is not a religion; it has no Dogmas you would need to follow even though it is spiritual in nature. It can be taught to anyone and does not need a special spiritual level or enlightenment, it works whether you believe in it or not.

The word Reiki is composed of two Japanese words - Rei (spirit) and Ki ( "life force/energy").

Reiki was developed in 1922 by Mikao Usui.

The 5 Ideals/principles of Reiki are:

  • Don't get angry.
  • Don't worry.
  • Be grateful.
  • Work diligently.
  • Be kind to others.

These ideals are claimed to have derived from the following five principles of the Meiji emperor of Japan.

  1. All classes, high and low, shall be united in vigorously carrying out the administration of affairs of state.
  2. Deliberative assemblies shall be widely established and all matters decided by open discussion.
  3. The common people, no less than the civil and military officials, shall all be allowed to pursue their own calling so that there may be no discontent.
  4. Evil customs of the past shall be broken off and everything based upon the just laws of Nature.
  5. Knowledge shall be sought throughout the world so as to strengthen the foundation of imperial rule.

The 5 ideals or Reki are recommended to be meditated upon in the morning and evening, they add a spiritual balance to Usui (light) Reiki. Their purpose is to help people understand that their healing is their own responsibility, the therapists merely assists in their understanding and helps them along their healing path.

It is administered by "laying the hands” on the body of the person receiving the treatment, in its original form the hands do not touch the body but are working on the Aura. Reki is based on the idea of regulating the flow of the "life force energy" Qi or Ki in Japanese. If someone has weak energy due to depletion then he/she can get sick very easily. So Reiki helps to strengthen this energy and bring it back to its normal level thus strengthening the body to ward-off any disease.
