The Seven main Chakras
Let's explore each chakra individually to understand its function, associated organs, emotional influence, and how to maintain its balance.
1. Root Chakra (Muladhara)
This is the chakra of roots and grounding. Muladhara Chakra is its Sanskrit name and it means “root / support.” It is the chakra that grounds us to the earth, and it is within this chakra that spiritual awakening begins. From this chakra, energy flows, opening and activating the six other chakras one by one as it moves up the spine. This chakra connects us to the physical and material world. It is associated with our basic survival instincts, including safety, security, and physical well-being. When balanced, it provides a sense of stability, grounding, and inner strength It is visualized as an intense, deep red—the color of origin and beginnings.
Location: Base of the spine (near the perineum and the coccygeal plexus.)

Governs: Survival, security, grounding, physical vitality
Physical Connections:
Governs the bones, legs, feet, bones, teeth, and large intestine Influences the adrenal glands, which regulate the body\'s fight-or-flight response

Underactive Root Chakra: Feelings of insecurity, fear, instability, lack of motivation
Overactive Root Chakra: Excessive materialism, aggression, resistance to change

- Practicing grounding exercises like walking barefoot on grass
- Eating root vegetables and red-colored foods
- Using grounding crystals like bloodstone, hematite, ruby, garnet and smoky quartz

2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)
This is the chakra of creativity and emotions. Svadhisthana Chakra is its Sanskrit name, meaning “self” (sva) and “dweling place” (adhistana). Also known as the "water chakra". It is the center of passion, pleasure, emotions,and self-expression, allowing us to embrace life’s joys and experiences. It influences how we connect with others, our ability to experience joy and passion, and our creative expression. This chakra governs emotional well-being, sensuality, and the ability to form meaningful relationships. This is where the ability of empathy or awareness of the emotions of others is channeled from. When balanced, it enhances creativity, confidence, and emotional flow. It is located in the lower abdomen the genitals, the womb and is visualized as a vibrant orange—the color of vitality, warmth, and transformation.
Location: Lower abdomen (two inches below the navel)

Governs: Creativity, emotions, sensuality, pleasure

Governs the reproductive system, kidneys, bladder, and lower digestive organs. Influences the gonads (ovaries/testes), which regulate hormones related to reproduction

Underactive Sacral Chakra: Emotional numbness, lack of creativity, fear of intimacy
Overactive Sacral Chakra: Overindulgence, addictive behaviors, mood swings
Balancing Techniques:
- Engaging in creative activities like painting, dancing, or writing
- Eating orange-colored foods like citrus fruits and carrots
- Practicing hip-opening yoga poses
- Using carnelian, coral, orange calcite, or moonstone for energy balance

3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)
The Solar Plexus Chakra, or Manipura, is the center of personal power and self-esteem. It determines how we assert ourselves, make decisions, and maintain a sense of control over our lives.
Location: Upper abdomen (above the navel)
Color: Yellow
Element: Fire
Mantra: "RAM"
Governs: Personal power, confidence, self-discipline
Physical Connections:
Governs the digestive system, pancreas, liver, and metabolism. Influences the adrenal glands and digestive organs
Signs of Imbalance:
Underactive Solar Plexus Chakra: Low self-confidence, indecisiveness, lack of motivation Overactive Solar Plexus Chakra: Controlling behavior, arrogance, perfectionism
Balancing Techniques:
- Engaging in activities that build confidence, such as setting and achieving small goals
- Eating yellow-colored foods like bananas, corn, and turmeric
- Practicing core-strengthening exercises like yoga or pilates
- Using tiger’s eye, citrine, or yellow jasper
4. Heart Chakra (Anahata)
The Heart Chakra, or Anahata, is the bridge between the lower (physical) and upper (spiritual) chakras. It governs love, relationships, and emotional balance. A balanced heart chakra allows us to give and receive love freely, while an imbalanced one may lead to emotional pain or detachment.

Color: Green (sometimes pink)
Element: Air

Governs: Love, compassion, emotional healing
Physical Connections:
Governs the heart, lungs, thymus gland, and blood circulation system Influences emotional healing including love, forgiveness and empathy as well as self love and trust
Signs of Imbalance:
Underactive Heart Chakra: Emotional coldness, fear of intimacy, holding grudges
Overactive Heart Chakra: Overdependence on others, lack of boundaries, emotional instability
Balancing Techniques:
- Practicing gratitude and compassion
- Spending time in nature, especially among greenery
- Eating green foods like spinach, broccoli, and avocados
- Using rose quartz, emerald, or green aventurine
- 5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)
The Throat Chakra, or Vishuddha, is the center of communication and self-expression. It influences our ability to speak our truth, express thoughts clearly, and listen to others with understanding.

Color: Blue
Element: Ether (Space)
Mantra: "HAM"
Governs: Communication, self-expression, truth

Governs the thyroid, throat, vocal cords, neck and shoulders and respiratory system Influences Self expression, honest communication, emotional release, creativity,decision making, purification of thoughts and emotions

Underactive Throat Chakra: Difficulty expressing oneself, social anxiety, dishonesty
Overactive Throat Chakra: Talking excessively, interrupting, dominating conversations

- Singing, chanting, or practicing mindful speech
- Eating blue foods like blueberries and herbal teas
- Using lapis lazuli, aquamarine, or sodalite
6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)
The Third Eye Chakra, or Ajna, is the center of intuition, wisdom, and inner vision. It helps us perceive beyond the physical world and enhances spiritual awareness.
Location: Between the eyebrows
Color: Indigo
Element: Light
Mantra: "OM"
Governs: Intuition, insight, perception
Physical Connections:
Governs the brain and nervous system, pituitary gland, eyes, forehead and sinuses. Influences the mental clarity and Intuition, imagination and creativity, self-reflection, perception of reality, logic and intuition

Underactive Third Eye Chakra: Lack of intuition, difficulty making decisions, poor memory, skepticism, disconnected from inner wisdom
Overactive Third Eye Chakra: Overactive imagination, delusions, hallucinations, excessive daydreaming, difficulty distinguishing reality from illusion

- Using amethyst, lapis lazuli, or fluorite
7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)
The Crown Chakra, or Sahasrara, connects us to higher consciousness and universal energy. It is the gateway to spiritual awakening and enlightenment.
Location: Top of the head
Color: Violet or White
Element: Divine Consciousness
Mantra: "Silence" or "OM"
Governs: Spiritual connection, enlightenment
Physical Connections:
Governs the brain and nervous system, pineal gland, skull and cerebral cortex Influences spiritual awareness, enlightenment and higher consciousness, sense of unity and purpose, inner peace and trust.
Signs of Imbalance:
Underactive Crown Chakra: Feeling disconnected from spirituality, lack of purpose, close-mindedness, cynicism, isolation, depression
Overactive Crown Chakra: Spiritual disconnection from reality, obsession with enlightenment, neglect of physical needs, difficulty grounding oneself
